Career Highlights
- 1998 FIFA World Cup (Goal vs Argentina): Owen burst onto the international scene in the 1998 World Cup, becoming one of the youngest-ever World Cup goal-scorers at 18. His stunning solo goal against Argentina in the Round of 16 made him a global sensation.
- England’s Second All-Time Top Scorer at One Point: During his international career, Owen scored 40 goals in 89 appearances, making him England’s second-highest all-time scorer at the time of his retirement.
- Premier League Golden Boot: Owen won the Premier League Golden Boot in back-to-back seasons (1997-98 and 1998-99) as the league’s top scorer.
- FA Cup, League Cup, and UEFA Cup Treble (2000-2001): Owen was instrumental in Liverpool’s successful treble in 2001, where they won the FA Cup, the League Cup, and the UEFA Cup. He scored two late goals in the FA Cup final against Arsenal to secure the title.
- Ballon d’Or Winner (2001): Owen became the first English player since Kevin Keegan to win the prestigious Ballon d’Or, awarded to the best player in the world, largely due to his performances for Liverpool and England.
Owen joined Spanish giants Real Madrid in 2004, where he scored 13 goals in 36 appearances despite limited playing time.
Owen returned to the Premier League with Newcastle United in 2005. Although his time there was marred by injuries, he remained one of the club’s top scorers during his tenure.
